When her father, home from the war, rode on a donkey to see the abandoned estate he had bought unseen, little did he know that years later, his enterprising daughter, Arabella, would bring the castello in the 20th century in such a uniquely wonderful way. Comfort combines with rural grandeur, making a most romantic and unusual holiday home.

Only an hour from Rome, this wonderful home with its air of rusticity, modestly described as a "peasant palace" by its owners, was built by a Renaissance Prince of the Papal State, with spectacular views of the surrounding Sabine hills. Now undergoing an extensive restoration project, this remarkably comfortable palazzo is available to rent for Italophiles who enjoy the unusual. Dominating the tiny nearby hamlet, its location at 2000 ft., makes it wonderfully cool in the summer.
Located on 7.5 acres of olives groves and gardens, the atmosphere at the Palazzo is one of great comfort, family history, frescoes, antiques, originality and great food. The mainstay of the palazzo is Rita, who can cook as few others can.
Miraculously, its great scale is not at all intimidating - on the contrary, it makes a fantastic venue for a group of close friends, or as an excuse for a memorable reunion of extended family. On one floor its communal living areas, abundant sofas and armchairs, and two bedroom suites are close enough to create intimacy. Guest bedrooms, children's rooms, secondary sitting areas and the billiard room on the upper floor are far enough away to provide privacy. Comfortable beds, linen sheets and lots of hot water in cavernous baths ensure maximum comfort.

The beautiful covered terrace, nearly 70 ft. long, must rank as one of the most relaxing sitting and eating areas in the world. Perfectly placed to watch a fiery red Italian sun sinking slowly behind a distant hill, this "extra room", with an eclectic collection of old basket chairs and a chaise lounge is a natural meeting point. The Palazzo is filled with the most delightful surprises, from a trompe l'oeil scene, disguised as a cupboard in the frescoed dining room, a silver framed photo of a famed war hero - to an indoor sundial. The house is loved by children, with a ping pong room, a large array of games, and a virtual treasure house for the curious and adventurous (supervised) child. The unrented parts contain ancient wine cellars, vast former kitchens and even a dungeon. Adults can escape the hubbub to one of the living rooms, or four areas of shade in the pool area. The present owner, and her husband turned archivist, have combined the attics collecting papers on the history of the Palazzo, now immaculately stored in boxes in the original billiard room providing a fascinating insight into the history of the Palazzo for their guests. The curious floor scale of the Palazzo is designed to confuse: steps leading up from the entrance to seemingly a first floor, yet referred firmly by its owners as "ground floor, piazza level". On three sides, smaller village houses nestle against it, while the fourth is a beautiful and private garden, complete with disused family chapel and resident white owl. The natural grounds have been sensitively combined with a more formal garden area, leading to the pool area with its magnificent views. Extra comfort is provided with a pool house, umbrellas and sunbeds.

It is easy to sink into the minutiae of life in this tiny hamlet, and all who visit this beautiful place will recall a romantic and memorable experience.
